Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed  Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing a “crisis of trust” between the two leaders. The decision comes at a crucial juncture as Israel faces ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon while bracing for potential Iranian retaliation.

In a recorded statement, Netanyahu explained that “trust between me and the minister of defence has cracked.” The Prime Minister’s office announced that current Foreign Minister Israel Katz will take over as defence minister, while Gideon Sa’ar will assume the role of foreign minister.

The timing of the reshuffle is particularly significant as it coincides with the U.S. presidential primary elections. Gallant has been a key liaison with the U.S. administration, maintaining regular communication with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Responding to his dismissal, Gallant posted on social media that the “security of Israel has been and will always be my lifelong mission.” In a televised statement, he attributed his removal to three main points of contention: the issue of ultra-Orthodox military service, the handling of hostages in Gaza, and the need for an official inquiry into Hamas’ October 7 attack.

The announcement has sparked protests across Israel, highlighting domestic tensions over the decision. This leadership change occurs as Israel continues to navigate complex security challenges, including the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon while maintaining strategic relationships with international allies.
