Israeli Air Force conducted airstrikes on Iran last night. Explosions were heard across Iranian capital Tehran. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said his country targeted Iranian nuclear and military sites. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards headquarters in Tehran have been hit in the Israeli attacks. Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami has been killed in the strike. He is among several senior leaders who have died in the attack. Fereydoon Abbasi, the former head of the Atomic Energy Organisation, has also been killed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme and will continue for as many days as it takes.
Israel has declared a special state of emergency across the country. Israeli defence minister said, schools will be closed in Israel today, as counter-attacks are expected in the immediate future.
The attack comes as tensions have reached new heights over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear programme. The Board of Governors at the International Atomic Energy Agency, for the first time in 20 years, censured Iran for not working with its inspectors. Iran has announced that it will establish a third enrichment site in the country and swap out some centrifuges for more advanced ones. Israel, for years, has warned it will not allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon. US has already pulled some diplomats from Iraq’s capital and offered voluntary evacuations for the families of US troops in the Middle East.
