Israel approves major fighter jet deal, acquiring F-35 and F-15IA squadrons to boost air superiority. The multi-billion shekel defense plan strengthens military capabilities, integrates advanced technologies, and enhances long-term strategic dominance amid evolving regional threats.

A major expansion of aerial combat capability has been set in motion following approval from a high-level procurement committee, signaling a long-term strategic shift in defense planning. The decision clears the way for the acquisition of two advanced fighter jet squadrons, reinforcing a broader military modernization program aimed at maintaining operational superiority in an increasingly complex regional environment.

The plan, formally endorsed by the Ministerial Committee on Procurement, includes the purchase of a fourth squadron of F-35 Lightning II aircraft from Lockheed Martin and a second squadron of F-15IA jets from Boeing. The procurement proposal was jointly presented by Defence Minister Israel Katz and Defence Ministry Director General Amir Baram.

According to official statements, the deal is valued at tens of billions of Israeli shekels and includes not only the aircraft themselves but also full integration into the national air force, logistics infrastructure, spare parts, and long-term maintenance support. The move represents the first concrete step in implementing a decade-long military buildup plan approved under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This long-term defense initiative is backed by a dedicated budget estimated at approximately 350 billion shekels, reflecting the scale and ambition of the modernization effort. The plan aims to ensure sustained air superiority, technological advancement, and operational flexibility over the coming decades.

Officials emphasized that the dual acquisition strategy is designed to combine the unique strengths of both aircraft platforms. The stealth capabilities and advanced avionics of the F-35 are expected to complement the heavy payload capacity and extended range of the F-15IA. Together, they are intended to provide a versatile response capability across a wide range of combat scenarios.

The Defence Ministry also linked the procurement decision to lessons learned from recent military operations, including Operation “Roaring Lion.” These experiences have underscored the importance of maintaining cutting-edge air power and adapting to emerging threats such as unmanned aerial systems.

Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed that a specialized initiative has been launched to counter the growing threat posed by drones. While acknowledging that technological solutions may take time to fully develop, he stressed that efforts are already underway to address the challenge.

Defence Minister Katz highlighted that the new acquisitions form a central component of the broader “Shield of Israel” plan. This strategy aims to secure a lasting qualitative edge by integrating next-generation defense technologies, including autonomous flight systems and advanced interception capabilities. The initiative also envisions expanding operational reach into new domains, including space-based defense and surveillance.

Katz further noted that the modernization effort is not limited to equipment procurement but extends to enhancing the overall readiness and adaptability of the armed forces. The objective, he said, is to ensure that military units possess the tools and capabilities required to operate effectively in any environment and at any time.

Amir Baram echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the critical role of strategic partnerships in enabling such large-scale defense initiatives. He pointed out that cooperation with the United States remains a cornerstone of military development, particularly in the context of advanced aviation technology.

Baram added that the complementary capabilities of the F-35 and F-15IA squadrons would provide the air force with increased flexibility, enabling it to respond effectively to both conventional and emerging threats. This layered approach to air power is expected to strengthen deterrence while also enhancing operational resilience.

As global security dynamics continue to evolve, the procurement decision reflects a proactive approach to defense planning. By investing in advanced fighter aircraft and next-generation technologies, the country aims to position itself at the forefront of modern warfare capabilities while ensuring long-term strategic stability.
