Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims it shot down a US MQ-1 drone after it allegedly entered Iranian territorial waters for hostile operations. The incident comes amid rising tensions, recent US military strikes in Iran, ceasefire concerns, and growing geopolitical instability in the Strait of Hormuz region.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it shot down a United States MQ-1 drone after it allegedly entered Iranian territorial waters to conduct hostile operations, according to a statement carried by the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Sunday.

The IRGC stated that the drone was detected shortly after entering Iranian territory and was subsequently targeted and destroyed by Iranian air defence missile systems. Iranian authorities described the drone’s mission as hostile and said the country’s military forces acted swiftly to neutralize the perceived threat.

The latest claim comes at a time of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, despite ongoing efforts to maintain a fragile ceasefire. Earlier in the week, the IRGC declared that it reserved the “legitimate and definite” right to respond to any violations of the ceasefire agreement by the United States. Iranian military officials also reported that air defence units had previously shot down a US MQ-9 drone, although independent verification of the claim has not been made.

According to reports in Iranian media, the IRGC further alleged that its forces engaged a fighter aircraft that had entered Iranian airspace. The reported aerial incidents occurred amid a series of military actions and counter-actions between the two countries in recent days.

The United States has acknowledged carrying out what it described as “self-defence strikes” inside Iran. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces targeted missile launch sites and mine-laying boats in southern Iran earlier this week.

In an official statement, CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins said the operations were conducted to protect US troops from threats posed by Iranian forces. He noted that the targets included missile launch facilities and Iranian vessels allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines in strategic waterways.

“US forces conducted self-defence strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” Hawkins stated. He added that CENTCOM continues to defend American personnel while exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire period.

US media outlets have also reported that American forces launched overnight strikes on Thursday against a military facility in Iran. Washington reportedly assessed the site as posing a threat to both US military personnel and commercial shipping operating in the region. US officials maintained that the attacks were defensive in nature and insisted that the ceasefire framework remains intact despite the latest hostilities.

Meanwhile, tensions in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz have continued to grow. Iranian news agency Fars reported that three explosions were heard east of the port city of Bandar Abbas during the early hours of Thursday morning. The cause of the explosions was not immediately confirmed.

The broader conflict has been fueled in part by longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear program. Washington has repeatedly cited concerns that Tehran could seek to develop nuclear weapons, an allegation Iran has consistently denied. The issue remains a central factor in regional security calculations and has contributed to ongoing friction involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

As both sides exchange accusations and military actions, international observers remain concerned that further escalation could threaten regional stability, disrupt maritime trade routes, and undermine efforts to preserve the existing ceasefire arrangement.
