In an attempt to break the deadlock on Feni water usage for drinking water treatment in Sabroom, a Joint Technical Team of India and Bangladesh visited several drinking water and irrigation schemes along the embankment of the river on Friday.

The Joint Technical Team held discussions at Daulbari area near Maitri Bridge over the use of water from the river Feni for a water treatment plant. It was decided that India would be able to use 1.82 cusecs of Feni River water per day for drinking purposes through an Intake Well. The well is located at 25 meters away from the River Feni.

Notably, works for setting up a water treatment plant at Daulbari under Sabroom Nagar Panchayat started in 2016. However, concerned authorities of both the countries were unable to reach a consensus relating to the use of water from the River Feni and as a result, the water treatment could not be commissioned.

After today’s visit by the Joint Technical Team, the issue, at the local level, has been addressed and paved way for using the Feni River water in Plant.

The Indian side was represented by District Magistrate of South Saju Wahid. He was accompanied by SDM of Sabroom Debdas Debbarma, officials of the Irrigation, Water Resources and other departments.

Chief Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Department Md Ramzan Ali Pramanik led the Bangladesh Team. According to a Government press release, a 12-member Bangladesh Team visited the area today.

Later speaking to the media, the DM of the South District said, the discussion at the local level was successful – now the higher-level authority will take the decision allowing us to use the water from the river Feni in Water Treatment Plant and use it for drinking purposes.
