At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Indian hockey team achieved a historic milestone by securing a bronze medal for the second consecutive Games, a feat not accomplished in 52 years. The team, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, triumphed over Spain with a 2-1 victory, thanks to two crucial goals from Singh and exceptional saves by retiring goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. This marks India’s first back-to-back Olympic medals in hockey since the 1972 Munich Games, following their bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the Indian hockey team on their remarkable achievement. She praised the team for their resurgence and highlighted their consistency, skill, and fighting spirit, which she believes will inspire India’s youth.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar also extended heartfelt greetings to the hockey team, commending them for making India proud on the global stage. He wished the team continued success in their future endeavours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spoke with the team over the phone in Paris, congratulated them for their commendable performance against Spain. He acknowledged their courageous effort following a challenging semifinal loss to Germany. PM Modi referred to captain Harmanpreet Singh as the “Sarpanch” of the team, praising his leadership and the collective effort of the team. He expressed confidence that Indian hockey is poised to revive its golden era.

This victory underscores the enduring strength of Indian hockey and sets a new benchmark for future Olympic performances.
