Security along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura has been intensified as Bangladeshi political groups reportedly attempted a march towards Indian borders near Agartala, officials confirmed. The escalation comes amid heightened tensions over recent incidents and in preparation for the upcoming North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary session scheduled for December 20-21 in Agartala.
West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar stated that enhanced border security measures were implemented due to multiple factors, including the NEC meet. The event will see the participation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and the Governors and Chief Ministers of all eight northeastern states.
March Towards Indian Borders Reported
Bangladeshi media reported that members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) affiliated groups, including the Jubo Dal, Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal, and Swecchasebak Dal, initiated a long march towards Agartala from Dhaka. The march was reportedly in response to the alleged desecration of Bangladesh’s national flag during a December 2 protest outside the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission (AHC) in Agartala.
The incident at the AHC, which occurred during demonstrations against atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh, led to the suspension of visa and consular services by the mission. Subsequently, three police sub-inspectors and one assistant commandant were suspended for negligence, and an inquiry was launched, headed by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Southern Range.
Tensions and Protests Intensify
The alleged desecration has further strained relations, sparking protests in Bangladesh. In India, various organizations in northeastern states have been holding regular demonstrations against reported atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh. These events have prompted the Border Security Force (BSF) to increase vigilance along the frontiers.
Security has been visibly tightened at sensitive locations, including the Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP), the second-largest trading point between India and Bangladesh. The BSF has been working closely with local authorities to prevent any cross-border escalation.
Bangladeshi Forces Prevent Border March
SP Kiran Kumar revealed that Bangladeshi security forces intervened to stop the march by the BNP-affiliated groups from reaching the Indian border. The move was confirmed through intelligence channels and Bangladeshi media reports.
Focus on NEC Plenary Session
Amid these developments, preparations for the NEC plenary session remain a priority. The high-profile meeting is expected to address regional development issues, making security a critical concern. Authorities have deployed additional personnel across the state, particularly near venues hosting the dignitaries.
