At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, India delivered another outstanding performance yesterday, clinching two historic gold medals in Judo, securing a memorable double podium finish in the Men’s Javelin Throw, winning a first-ever bronze medal in the Decathlon, and booking places for 10 boxers in their respective finals.
Judokas Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh scripted history by becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medallists in the sport. Asmita clinched the women’s 48-kilogram title after defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach in the golden score, while Harsh defeated Australian Olympian Joshua Katz to win the yellow metal in Men’s 60-kilogram category. Yamini Mourya added a silver in the women’s 57-kilogram event, giving India its best-ever Commonwealth Games campaign in judo with two gold and one silver medal.
In Athletics, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra won silver in the men’s javelin throw with a season-best effort of 85.83 metres. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage claimed gold with a throw of 89.75 metres, while India’s Yashvir Singh secured bronze with a personal-best effort of 85.41 metres on his final attempt. Tejaswin Shankar also created history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon, claiming bronze.
India’s boxers also delivered an outstanding performance, with 10 pugilists winning their respective semi-final bouts to enter the finals. They are : Sakshi Chaudhary in Women’s 51 kg, Preeti Pawar in Women’s 54kg, Jaismine Lamboria in Women’s 57 kg, Priya Ghanghas in Women’s 60kg, Arundhati Choudhary in Women’s 70 kg and Lovlina Borgohain in Women’s 75kg, Jadumani Singh in Men’s 55kg, Sachin Siwach in Men’s 60kg, Ankush Panghal in Men’s 80kg and Narender Berwal in Men’s 90(Plus) kg.
In lawn bowls, Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar registered their fourth consecutive victory in the Men’s Pairs event, while Nayanmoni Saikia won her women’s singles match. However, it was a disappointing outing for India’s cyclists. Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh Sekhon failed to qualify for the men’s 4,000-metre individual pursuit, while no Indian rider advanced in the men’s keirin event.
India is currently placed 10th in the overall medal standings with 23 medals-five gold, 12 silver and six bronze. Australia continues to top the table with 128 medals, including 55 gold.
