The General Secretary of the India Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI), Sujit Roy, stated on Thursday that trade associations from Tripura and neighbouring Bangladesh are looking into ways to boost the handicraft sector.

A five-member delegation from the Bangladesh Handicrafts Manufacturers and Exporters Association arrived in Agartala, Tripura’s capital, on Thursday. Welcoming the delegates, the Tripura Merchants’ Association and IBCCI organized an interaction program to discuss opportunities for collaboration.

Speaking about the purpose of the meeting, IBCCI General Secretary Sujit Roy highlighted the focus on strengthening ties with the Bangladeshi counterparts through expanding the handicraft market. He mentioned the Bangladesh International Jute and Handicrafts Trade Fair scheduled from April 25 to April 29 this year, where larger participation from Tripura is sought.

Former Vice President of the Bangladesh Handicrafts Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Kazi Shahab Uddin, led the delegation and expressed the desire to strengthen export and import business with Tripura. Recognising the demand for Bangladeshi products, such as sarees, during Tripura’s industry fairs, the delegation seeks to expand market access for their handicrafts.

Uddin highlighted the high demand for Bangladeshi products like sarees in Tripura and expressed interest in accessing Tripura’s raw materials, such as bamboo and cane, to expand the market further. The delegation aims to strengthen bilateral trade relations by leveraging shared cultural ties and exploring mutual business opportunities.
