PM Modi and Polish PM Donald Tusk discussed expanding India-Poland cooperation in defence, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and green technology. Both leaders agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade by 2030 and highlighted the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk held wide-ranging discussions at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Thursday, exploring new avenues of cooperation in defence, artificial intelligence (AI), critical minerals, green technologies, trade and investment. Both leaders agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade by 2030 and highlighted the importance of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The meeting marked another significant step in strengthening the India-Poland Strategic Partnership, established in 2024. The two leaders discussed ways to expand cooperation across several sectors, including education, culture and people-to-people exchanges, while also exchanging views on regional and global developments.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions focused on building a stronger and more diversified partnership between the two countries. The leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in emerging technologies, sustainable development and strategic industries, reflecting their shared interest in expanding economic and diplomatic engagement.

In a statement shared on X, the MEA said Modi and Tusk had discussed new areas of cooperation in AI, green technologies, critical minerals and defence, while seeking to deepen existing ties in trade, investment, education and culture.

Both leaders agreed to work together to double bilateral trade by 2030. They also emphasised the importance of the India-EU FTA, which is expected to create additional opportunities for businesses and industries and provide fresh momentum to economic relations.

The discussions also covered international developments and the importance of maintaining a rules-based international order. According to the MEA, the two prime ministers reaffirmed their commitment to reforming global institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, to make international governance more responsive to contemporary challenges.

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called on Tusk and discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation between India and Poland across various sectors. In a post on X, Jaishankar expressed appreciation for the Polish prime minister’s views on expanding bilateral engagement.

Tusk arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday evening for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening cooperation in defence, trade and strategic affairs. Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary received him at the airport.

Welcoming the Polish leader, the MEA said the visit would provide fresh impetus to the India-Poland Strategic Partnership and further strengthen longstanding bilateral ties.

Tusk is accompanied by Poland’s Minister of Finance and Economy, Andrzej Domanski, along with a high-level business delegation. According to the MEA, this is Tusk’s second visit to India as Polish prime minister, following his earlier visit in 2010 during his previous tenure.

As part of his visit, Tusk is scheduled to travel to Bengaluru after completing his engagements in New Delhi. In Bengaluru, he will interact with business stakeholders, including representatives from India’s information technology and space sectors.

Business engagement is also a key component of the visit. The India-Poland Business Forum is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on October 22 and in Bengaluru on October 23, bringing attention to opportunities for commercial partnerships and investment.

The discussions come as India and Poland seek to broaden their strategic and economic relationship amid changing global trade patterns and technological developments. Cooperation in defence, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and green technologies could open additional avenues for collaboration, while stronger business ties and the proposed India-EU trade agreement may support the leaders’ goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
