IMD forecasts above normal rainfall in July across India –

The India Meteorological Department- IMD has forecast that the monthly average rainfall over the country as a whole during July 2025 is most likely to be above normal, exceeding 106 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA). During a virtual press conference, the Director General of IMD, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, stated that most parts of the country are likely to experience normal to above-normal rainfall. He said, however, most parts of Northeast and East India and many areas of extreme South Peninsular India and some areas of Northwest India are likely to receive below normal rainfall during July this year.
 
The Southwest Monsoon set in over Kerala on 24th May against the normal date of 1st of June, which is the earliest onset in 17 years after 2009, when it was on 23rd May. The Southwest Monsoon covered the entire country on 29th June June which is nine days ahead of its normal date of 8th July. Dr Mohapatra said that the country as a whole received 180 millimetres of rainfall in June this year, which is above the normal range of 165.3 millimetres. He said, however, less than normal rainfall was witnessed in East and Northeast India, with only 272.9 mm against the normal range of 328.4 mm. He said, In July 2025, monthly average maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal in many regions, except northeast India and some areas of the northwest, east and southern peninsula, where they are likely to be above normal.
 
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast active monsoon conditions to continue over many parts of Northwest, Central, and East India during the next five to six days. IMD predicted heavy to very heavy Rainfall at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha today. The weather agency predicted heavy rainfall over Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, East Rajasthan, Gujarat State, Jharkhand today. The met department estimated similar conditions over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, West Bengal and Sikkim. IMD also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning & gusty winds at isolated places over Bihar, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Muzaffarabad.
