The Indian Air Force successfully test-fired the extended-range version of the BrahMos Air Launched missile in the Bay of Bengal, according to a statement on Thursday.

The new anti-ship type of the air-launched version of the missile can hit targets at a range of around 400 km, Defence officials said.

After being launched from a Su-30 fighter aircraft, the missile hit the target ship in centre.

The extended range capability of the missile coupled with the high performance of the Su-30MKI aircraft gives the IAF a strategic reach and allows it to dominate future battlefields.

It was IAFs first launch of extended-range version of BrahMos missile from Su-30MKI aircraft, enabling IAF to achieve the capability to carry out precision strikes from Su-30MKI aircraft against a land/ sea target over very long ranges.
