In hockey, Indian men’s team stunned reigning world champions Germany with a 3-1 victory in the FIH Pro League in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, last night.
Thirty-three-year-old Manpreet Singh became India’s most-capped hockey player during the match, making his 413th appearance for the country. He surpassed former captain and current Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey, who represented India 412 times in his illustrious career.
India took a 2-0 lead at half-time, with goals from Mandeep Singh in the 7th minute and Shilanand Lakra in the 13th minute. Nilakanta Sharma extended India’s lead with a goal in the 35th minute.
Germany managed to pull one back through Raphael Hartkopf in the 45th minute, but India held on to secure a 3-1 win.
India will face Germany again today in the second leg of the fixture before taking on the Netherlands on Sunday.
In the following week, India will play Pakistan and England twice to conclude their Pro League campaign. Earlier, India had suffered a 2-3 defeat against Olympic champions the Netherlands on the 14th of this month.
