Union Home Minister and former BJP national president Amit Shah is set to lay the foundation stone for the Tripura state headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on December 22. The ceremony will take place at Natun Nagar, on the outskirts of Agartala, according to party officials.

The new four-storey building is designed to feature modern amenities, including an auditorium and smaller meeting halls, to address the space constraints of the current BJP headquarters. A senior party leader noted, “This facility will bolster the party’s organizational infrastructure and provide a more efficient working environment for its leaders and members.”

BJP’s growth in Tripura has been remarkable since it began its organizational activities in 1983. The party came to power in the state in March 2018, ending the CPI-M-led Left Front’s 35-year rule. This political milestone marked a significant shift in Tripura’s political landscape.

In its recent membership drive, BJP in Tripura nearly doubled its numbers compared to 2019, registering over 11.91 lakh members. Bhagaban Chandra Das, BJP MLA and state in-charge of the membership drive, highlighted the surge in membership due to the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare initiatives. “People from diverse backgrounds, including tribals, Scheduled Castes, women, farmers, and workers, have enthusiastically joined the party,” Das said.

Out of the total membership, 9.41 lakh members registered online, while 2.50 lakh opted for offline registration. The previous drive in 2019 had recorded 6.50 lakh members.

Das added that the party has commenced elections for its 3,349 booth-level units. Following this, elections for 60 Mandals and district and state-level bodies will be conducted to strengthen the organization further.
