A 55 years old housewife was buried alive after a mud house in which she was sleeping collapsed owing to incessant rains on Tuesday night. In the mishap, three goats and a few chickens were also buried under the debris and died. The incident occurred at Polishpara under Ghilatali in Kalyanpur on Tuesday night.

Sabitri Sarkar, the deceased was sleeping in a mud house and other members were sleeping in separate nearby rooms.

The financially weak family is dependent on small agricultural activities and odd jobs. The other members of the family came to know about the incident around three hours later when they got up and noticed that the mud house was completely demolished. Relatives with the help of the neighbours rescued Sabitri Sarkar from under debris and rushed to the Kalyanpur Hospital. The attending doctor announced her brought dead and reportedly released the body without conducting any post-mortem. Later, MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury contacted the Hospital and asked them to conduct a post- mortem as with a post-mortem report and Police report, the victim’s family would not be eligible forany government assistance. He vented anger at the negligence of the Health Department and said that he would bring the issue of releasing the body without post-mortem to the notice of the District Medical Officer.    The MLA assured that soon a team from the Block Development Office will visit the deceased woman’s residence to inquire about possible compensation.

A pall of gloom descended in the area following the tragic incident.
