Round 2 of the FIDE World Cup 2025 is underway in Goa today with seventeen of the India’s top players including D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanandhaa remained in contention. Game 2 is a pivotal moment for them to either clinch advancement or push their matches to tiebreaks. Following a strong performances in Game 1 yesterday, the Indian contingent will look to carry their momentum forward, stay composed, and book their spots in Round 3.
After the completion of Game 1 in Round 2 on Tuesday, India’s campaign at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 remains well-balanced. The top three players in the country, Gukesh D, R Praggnanandhaa, and Vidit Gujrathi, started with solid draws. They will try to win their games today.
In Matches of Game 2, Gukesh won against Kazakhstan’s Kazybek Nogerbek to reach at round 3 while Praggnanandhaa has drawn his match with Temur Kuybokarov. Anish Giri won his match against Bojan Maksimovic. Gukesh, Anish, Arjun Erigaisi, Pentala Harikrishna and Diptayan Ghosh have reached in round 3.
Few results have already gone in India’s favour as Arjun Erigaisi has made into next round after winning both of his match 1 and match 2. Diptayan Ghosh has won his match 2 after he has to share his points with opponent yesterday and Pentala Harikrishna produced one of the standout performances of the tournament with a stunning queen sacrifice that led to victory.
Bold tactical play and precise execution earned these Indian players place in the highly competitive third round. 12-year-old Argentine prodigy Oro Faustino, popularly called ‘Messi of Chess’, has held Indian Grand Master Vidit Gujrathi to draw in Round 2 of the FIDE World Cup.
