Train services in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section were severely disrupted following the derailment of a loaded goods wagon inside tunnel no. 2 near Mupa, at kilometer marker 52/5, on October 31, 2024. Efforts to restore normalcy are underway, according to Northeast Frontier Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma. He confirmed that senior railway officials are on-site, closely monitoring the ongoing repair and restoration work.
The derailment, which occurred around 4 p.m., has affected train schedules, leading to the cancellation of at least six key trains on the Guwahati line, including popular routes like the Guwahati-Agartala, New Jalpaiguri-Guwahati, Guwahati-Dullabcherra, Guwahati-Silchar, Silchar-Guwahati, and the Tripura Sundari Express (Agartala-Firozpur Cant). Additionally, some trains have been partially canceled, including the SMVT Bengaluru-Agartala Humsafar Express and Tejas Rajdhani Express from Anand Vihar Terminal to Agartala.
The Northeast Frontier Railway has assured passengers that restoration efforts are proceeding at full pace, with expectations of resuming regular train services by the end of the day. Passengers are advised to stay updated on train schedules and any further adjustments to avoid inconvenience. The disruption highlights the importance of safety measures in challenging hill sections, where even minor derailments can lead to significant delays.
The CPRO’s statement also emphasized the railway’s commitment to swiftly restoring connectivity for passengers and freight services, especially as this line is a vital transportation link for the region.
