Ghana’s Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed have died in a military helicopter crash in the central Ashanti region, yesterday. Six others were also killed in the crash, including key government and military officials.

The chief of staff ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast. President John Dramani Mahama expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The Z9 military helicopter took off from the capital, Accra and was on its way to the town of Obuasi for an event focused on tackling illegal mining when it went off the radar.
