In a groundbreaking achievement, the Pediatrics Department at GBP Hospital, Agartala’s premier referral hospital, successfully conducted a complex surgery on a newborn with the lowest recorded birth weight in the hospital’s history. The baby, born at just 670 grams in Dhalai District Hospital on August 7, 2024, was transferred to GBP Hospital for critical care and continuous monitoring, where dedicated doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize the child and prepare for the life-saving procedure.
The success of this challenging surgery was celebrated at a press conference at GBP Hospital on Thursday, where the medical team shared insights into the immense challenges they faced. Leading pediatrician Dr. Srinibas Das highlighted the technical obstacles involved in treating such a low-weight infant, noting that the hospital’s modest resources made the procedure even more remarkable. “Compared to other advanced facilities in countries like Japan, our achievement with minimal setup underscores our team’s skill and determination. This baby, weighing just 600 grams during the most critical periods, needed extensive monitoring over the past three months to ensure stability,” Dr. Das said.
The operation has not only highlighted GBP Hospital’s medical capabilities but also bolstered the confidence of both the medical community and families across the state. The team’s successful efforts in saving the infant have been widely recognized, with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha extending his congratulations to the hospital staff. In a social media post, Dr. Saha expressed his pride in the historic achievement: “Today, the child stands as a testament to the extraordinary expertise and dedication of GBP Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College. Now weighing a healthy 1.490 kg, this milestone reflects the skill and commitment of our healthcare professionals.”
Dr. Saha emphasized that this accomplishment not only celebrates the medical team’s hard work but also sets a promising benchmark in pediatric healthcare in the state. “This astounding achievement is a new feather in the cap for both institutions and brings hope to many families. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire medical team for reaching this milestone.”
