France will head into the second round of its snap election today, after President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the current parliament and called the snap elections three years ahead of time. Preliminary results showed that Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally secured more than 30 percent of the vote in the first snap election.

Polling projections suggest that the National Rally could win the most seats ever in the next National Assembly. If they secure 289 seats for an absolute majority, Macron might appoint Jordan Bardella as France’s new prime minister.

On June 9, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and called for new parliamentary elections following the far-right’s sweeping victory in the European elections. The elections for France’s lower house, the National Assembly, is being held in two rounds, with candidates vying for 577 seats.
