Actress and former Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty records a confidential magistrate statement in the Bongaon harassment case as police add physical assault charges against the main accused, marking a major development in the ongoing investigation.
Bengali film actress and former Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Mimi Chakraborty on Thursday recorded her confidential statement before a magistrate in connection with an ongoing harassment case linked to an incident in Bongaon, located in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The statement was recorded as part of an expanding investigation that has now incorporated additional criminal charges against the main accused.
The case stems from an incident that occurred on the night of January 25, when Chakraborty had travelled to Bongaon to perform at a stage show in the Nayagopalganj area. According to her complaint, she was subjected to rude and inappropriate behavior during the event, prompting her to later approach law enforcement authorities.
Initially, Chakraborty had named Tanay Shastri as the sole accused in the harassment allegation. She claimed that during the live performance, Shastri had behaved discourteously and asked her to leave the stage, allegedly citing her delayed arrival at the program. The actress subsequently filed a written complaint via email with the local police station, outlining the sequence of events and her grievances.
As the investigation progressed, tensions reportedly escalated when police officers visited the residence of the accused to carry out inquiries related to the complaint. According to police sources, Tanay Shastri and two of his associates allegedly obstructed the officials in the discharge of their duties. A scuffle reportedly ensued, following which Shastri was arrested on charges of obstructing government work and interfering with an active investigation.
In a significant development this week, investigators added an additional charge of physical assault against Shastri. Sources confirmed that the new charge was formally filed on Wednesday, broadening the legal scope of the case. Mimi Chakraborty’s confidential statement before the magistrate is understood to be directly connected to this newly added charge.
Speaking briefly to a section of the media after recording her statement, Chakraborty emphasized her trust in due process. “Every investigation has a specific process. This statement is given according to that investigation. My fight was against falsehood. That fight will continue,” she said, reiterating her determination to pursue the matter through legal channels.
The accused, Tanay Shastri, has consistently denied the allegations since the beginning of the case. He has claimed that he did not disrespect or harass the actress in any manner during the Bongaon event. However, Chakraborty has firmly refuted these claims, maintaining that her complaint is specific and limited to Shastri alone.
Addressing the controversy, the actress clarified that the overall atmosphere at the event was cordial. “Everyone at the club that day behaved very politely with me. Everyone except Tanay Shastri behaved very well. My complaint is against that person,” she stated. She also noted that the event continued smoothly even after she left the venue, with other performances taking place later that night.
