Dharmanagar witnessed an emotional farewell on Monday as former Tripura minister and veteran Congress leader Kalidas Dutta was cremated with full state honours at the Dharmanagar Mahashmashan Ghat. The respected political figure passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 80 following a cardiac arrest, leaving behind a legacy of public service and political leadership in Tripura.

According to family members, Dutta had been suffering from age-related ailments for a considerable period. On Sunday afternoon, he reportedly experienced severe chest pain at his residence in Nayapara. Family members immediately rushed him to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The news of his demise spread quickly across Dharmanagar and other parts of the state, drawing condolences from political leaders, party workers, supporters and admirers. On Monday morning, his mortal remains were taken from his residence to the District Congress Bhavan, where people from different walks of life gathered to pay their final respects.

Several senior Congress leaders, local residents and well-wishers attended the tribute ceremony and remembered Dutta for his contributions to the political and social development of Dharmanagar. The funeral procession later moved towards the Dharmanagar Mahashmashan Ghat, where the last rites were performed with full state honours. The administration arranged a ceremonial guard of honour as a mark of respect for the former minister.

Newly elected MLA Jahar Chakraborty, District Congress president Digbijoy Chakraborty, Chayan Bhattacharjee and several eminent personalities were present during the funeral ceremony. Administrative officials, including Additional District Magistrate and Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Debyani Chowdhury, also attended the cremation and paid tribute.

Kalidas Dutta was elected as MLA from the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in 1988. He later served as Minister of State in the then Congress-led coalition government in Tripura. During his political career, he earned respect for his dedication to public welfare and grassroots leadership.

Paying tribute to the departed leader, MLA Jahar Chakraborty described Dutta as not only a senior political leader but also his teacher. He stated that Dutta had played a crucial role in the development of Dharmanagar and had consistently worked towards maintaining peace, unity and communal harmony in the state.
