Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s convoy was allegedly attacked in Bamutia’s Kalibazar, with CPI(M) accusing BJP-backed miscreants of blocking the road and vandalising an escort vehicle during heightened political activity ahead of TTAADC Village Committee elections.
Tensions reportedly escalated in Tripura’s Bamutia area on Sunday morning after the convoy of former Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar was allegedly stopped and attacked at Kalibazar around 10 a.m. The CPI(M) accused BJP-backed miscreants of being involved in the incident, which temporarily disrupted Sarkar’s movement for nearly 40 minutes.
According to accounts provided by CPI(M) leaders, Sarkar was travelling to Bamutia to attend a party organisational conference when a group of individuals allegedly blocked the road at Kalibazar. The reported blockade prevented the convoy from moving forward, creating tension at the location.
The CPI(M) further alleged that one of the vehicles accompanying the former Chief Minister was vandalised during the incident. The situation reportedly remained tense for some time as the convoy was unable to proceed towards the conference venue.
Following the confrontation, CPI(M) supporters, including members of the party’s youth wing, reportedly gathered at the spot. According to the party’s account, the supporters resisted the individuals involved in the blockade, after which the group allegedly dispersed from the area.
Despite the disruption, Manik Sarkar subsequently continued his journey and reached the scheduled venue in Bamutia. He later addressed the organisational conference as planned.
CPI(M) leaders condemned the alleged incident, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition political voices. The party has also raised concerns over the political atmosphere in the state amid increased campaigning and organisational activities ahead of the TTAADC Village Committee elections.
The alleged attack has added to political tensions in Tripura, where opposition parties and ruling alliance leaders have been engaged in competing campaigns and public programmes. The CPI(M) has previously alleged incidents of political intimidation and violence, while the ruling side has rejected such allegations.
