Forgery scandal at Biodiversity Board office as staffer arrested for fake DDO signatures and fund embezzlement. Probe suggests financial fraud may reach Rs 25 lakh, triggering investigation into possible wider corruption and accountability lapses.
A serious case of alleged financial misconduct has come to light at the Biodiversity Board’s Gurkhabasti office, where a staff member has been taken into police custody on accusations of forgery and fund misappropriation. The accused, identified as Surajit Chakraborty, was working as a multi-task staff member and is now under investigation for allegedly forging the signature of the office’s Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO), Dasu Chakma.
According to preliminary findings, the suspected embezzlement amounts to approximately Rs 3.5 lakh. However, officials involved in the investigation have indicated that the total figure could rise significantly as the probe progresses, with estimates suggesting potential losses between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh. Authorities have begun a comprehensive review of financial documents and transaction records to determine the exact scale of the irregularities.
The case reportedly surfaced after discrepancies were noticed in official financial transactions. These irregularities prompted internal concern, leading to the filing of a formal complaint. Acting swiftly on the complaint, officers from the New Capital Complex Police Station initiated an inquiry and detained the accused for questioning.
Law enforcement officials have stated that the investigation is still in its early stages, and multiple aspects are being examined, including whether the alleged fraud was carried out independently or involved additional individuals. Forensic analysis of documents and digital records is expected to play a key role in uncovering further details.
