India’s women’s hockey team gears up for two high-stakes matches against World No. 2 Argentina in the FIH Pro League 2024–25. Captain Salima Tete vows a fierce fight, as the team eyes crucial points and a morale boost before upcoming matches in Antwerp and Berlin.

As the FIH Pro League 2024–25 (Women) continues with high-intensity action, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team is preparing for two crucial back-to-back matches against World No. 2 Argentina on June 17 and 18 at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in London.

The Indian squad, led by Captain Salima Tete, is determined to bounce back after a narrow defeat to Australia and is bracing for a spirited fight against one of the strongest teams in international hockey.

Currently ranked 7th on the FIH Pro League table with 9 points, India faces a daunting challenge against Argentina, who are placed 2nd and have already clinched 7 victories from their 12 matches in this season’s league. Despite the odds, the Indian team is showing confidence and composure, focusing on strategic execution and team cohesion in hopes of earning crucial points.

Speaking ahead of the doubleheader, Salima Tete acknowledged Argentina’s formidable form but reaffirmed her team’s commitment to putting up a strong performance. “Argentina is ranked No. 2 in the world and has won 7 of their 12 FIH Pro League matches so far. Coming into this leg of the league, we knew they would be one of the toughest teams to beat. But we won’t go down without a fight — we’ll give it our all in both matches,” she said, according to Hockey India.

Salima emphasized that the team has been training rigorously and preparing various tactical plans to counter Argentina’s fast-paced and aggressive playing style. “The team has been working hard to take them on and has been working on various strategies to win crucial points against them,” she added.

Vice-captain Navneet Kaur echoed the captain’s sentiments, highlighting the Indian team’s resilience and improved performance in recent matches. “As you saw, the team gave Australia a tough fight in the last two matches, and we’re planning to do the same against Argentina. We’ll give it our all and aim to come out victorious,” she said.

Navneet further pointed out the broader significance of the upcoming matches beyond just points. “A win against Argentina will not only help us gain points but will also give the team a big morale boost as we head to Antwerp and then Berlin for our matches against Belgium and China,” she explained.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team has shown glimpses of brilliance throughout the season, and their narrow losses against top-tier teams indicate their rising potential. The matches against Argentina present not just a test of skill and endurance, but also an opportunity to fine-tune their game plan for future clashes.

Argentina, on the other hand, will be looking to consolidate their position near the top of the standings. Known for their fluid attack and disciplined defense, Las Leonas are expected to push India to their limits. However, the Indian team’s fighting spirit and recent tactical improvements under the coaching staff may serve as a counterbalance.

The double clash in London is not just a sporting contest—it is a chance for India to make a statement on the world stage, show their growth, and gain momentum heading into the latter stages of the league.

As fans await the face-off, all eyes will be on how Salima Tete and her team handle the pressure and rise to the occasion.
