The National Search and Rescue Agency’s Surabaya office said the vessel carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members went down, while en route from Banyuwangi on Java’s eastern coast to the popular tourist island of Bali.

Rescuers located four survivors in a lifeboat during the early hours today. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. According to local media reports, the ferry had reported engine trouble shortly before it sank.
