Dr. KM Cherian, a world-renowned cardiologist for over 50 years passed away at Bengaluru. The 82-year-old Cardiologist reportedly collapsed while attending a wedding yesterday. He had recently launched his biography in Kerala. Among many credits, was his first heart-lung transplant on a patient in India.
A pioneer in cardiac surgery patients from all over the world thronged to the Frontier Lifeline Hospital and Frontier Mediville, a large medical science park that he set up in Chennai. His approach towards children was highly applauded as he dealt with him in his own kind and compassionate manner first treating the fear psychosis of both the Parents and the children. After completing his medical education at Kasturba Gandhi Hospital at Manipal he taught at CMC Vellore. He was fine-trained in cardiac surgery in Australia and New Zealand. He was also a term as honorary cardiac surgeon to the President and worked extensively with patients who came from foreign Nations for treatment. Some of the experiences he shared on the occasion include how he performed heart surgeries on 20 Iraqi children and how he played the role of a diplomat in the release of four Indian drivers who were imprisoned in Iraq.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the passing away of Dr Cherian. In a social media post, he said Dr. Cherian was one of the most distinguished doctors of the country. His contribution to cardiology will always be monumental, not only saving many lives but also mentoring doctors of the future. His emphasis on technology and innovation always stood out.
