The opposition CPM on Monday pressed for immediate step for passage of 125th Constitution Amendment Bill 2019″ so that Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council gets empowered with necessary legislative and financial powers.

“This is important for all-round development of and meeting the aspiration of the indigenous people of the state’, said CPM’s tribal wing Tripura Gana Mukti Parishad president Jitendra Choudhury while attending the World Indigenous People’s Day

He also demanded that a Bill for inclusion of the Kokborok ( Tripura tribal language) under the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India be placed in the Parliament. The former MP also demanded specific endeavours on the part of the government to develop the language and culture of all the ethnic groups of the state including Halam-Kuki, Mog,Chakma, Santhal, Munda and Orang etc.

Chowdhuri said, “As Covid-19 situations and late monsoon have largely affected the jhum cultivation this year, the jhumia families should be compensated with cash relief of Rs. 25,000 and 50 man-days job per family, in addition to their due of 100 man-days under MGNREGA.”

He also demanded the government to ensure housing under PMAY scheme and providing patta under RoFR to all residual landless ST families, who were staying in the forest area for years. On jobs for ST people, Chowdhury urged the government to fill up all the available vacancies along with the backlog under the government department and Undertakings by observing the 100 point roster.
