The Election Commission has suspended five booth-level officers after questions were raised about their neutrality ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal. Alongside departmental inquiries, instructions have also been issued to file FIRs against the accused.
Commission sources revealed that the officers were allegedly working directly for a political party. In North 24 Parganas’ Barasat subdivision, three BLOs have been suspended. They had earlier been served show-cause notices, but their responses were found unsatisfactory. In fact, one officer reportedly refused to respond altogether.
Meanwhile, similar action has been taken in Birbhum district, where two BLOs in Dubrajpur and Mayureswar were accused of the same misconduct.
The Election Commission has emphasised strict measures to ensure neutrality and fairness in the electoral process.
