In view of the ominous increase of narcotics use in the region as well as conspicuous rise of fundamentalist and terrorist activities across the borders, the top brass of the North East states’ police departments, Central Paramilitary forces and intelligence services stressed on greater regional cooperation and information exchanges.
The top officials of the police and security services recently met at Tripura Police Headquarters in Agartala in what was called as North-East Regional Coordination Meeting . One expert of narcotics and substance uses from New Delhi Dr Atul Ambekar attended the meeting as special guest.
Director of North Eastern Police Academy, Joint Director of Intelligence Bureau, New Delhi, Inspector Generals of Border Security Force, Tripura Frontier Central Reserve Police Force, Tripura Sector and Deputy Director of Intelligence Bureau, Agartala were also attended the meeting.
The meeting apart from narcotics, fundamentalist forces, terrorism also discussed among others organized crimes, illicit trafficking capacity building, police modernisation etc.
The meeting specifically emphasized on the concerted and smooth communications and intelligence inputs sharing among the North Eastern states so that effective and meaningful steps could be taken to prevent criminal activities and preempt terrorist threats .
Dr Atul Ambekar an eminent expert in the field of drug abuse and also a Professor and In-charge of National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi presented before the officials details of the narcotic psychotropic substance uses, modes, effects, fall outs and other related issues. He also suggested formulation drug control policies in the region.
