DRI Seizes Methamphetamine Tablets worth Rs. 16 crores in Mizoram, Arrests two Traffickers

16 brick-sized packages containing pink/orange colour tablets were found cleverly hidden in specially fabricated chambers beneath the rear seat and in the fuel tank. On testing, the recovered tablets were found to be methamphetamine, a contraband drug. The contraband drug weighing 16 kg, having value of ₹16 crores in the international illicit drug market, has been seized along with the vehicle and the driver and his accomplice has been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Initial investigation indicates that the contraband drug was smuggled from Myanmar. During the subsequent procedures when the DRI officers were in the process of producing the arrested persons before the court in the morning of June 4, one of the arrested persons assaulted the officers and escaped from custody.

In a swift concerted search operation by the DRI, with assistance of the local police and local community, the accused person was nabbed at Hridaikawn, Tlangnuam on the outskirts of Aizawl. This is the second seizure of big consignment of methamphetamine tablets by DRI in Mizoram in less than a week. Earlier on 30th May, 9.72 kg of methamphetamine tablets were seized and one person arrested in Seling.

The NDPS Act prescribes stringent punishment to offenders including rigorous imprisonment up to 10 years. The active support and cooperation of the people with the law enforcement agencies will go a long way in combating the rampant smuggling and trafficking of contraband drugs in the region.
