Benchmark domestic equity indices rebounded today and ended one per cent higher. The Sensex climbed 776 points to close at 76,836, while the Nifty rose 229 points to settle at 23,996.In the broader market at the National Stock Exchange, Midcap 100 index added 1.1 per cent, while the Smallcap 100 index soared 1.3 per cent.
Earlier, the markets opened with a gap-up amid easing geopolitical concerns and a decline in crude oil prices. Positive investor sentiment fuelled broad-based buying across sectors, driving the Sensex and Nifty higher throughout the intraday session. The sustained gains helped both benchmark indices end their five-day losing streak.
In the Sensex pack, 28 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top performers, Eternal surged over 5.6 per cent, Indigo rose more than 4.9 per cent and Infosys added nearly 3.7 per cent. In contrast, HDFC Bank dropped 0.4 per cent, and Axis Bank ended marginally lower.
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, barring Telecommunication which dipped almost 0.7 per cent, all other sectors ended in positive zone. Among the top gainers, MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt advanced over 2.3 per cent, IT rose 2.3 per cent, and Realty gained more than 2.2 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2 thousand 779 companies advanced, 1 thousand 579 declined, and 200 remained unchanged.
