Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday following weeks of nationwide protests over the NEET paper leak controversy, bringing a dramatic political development to one of the country’s biggest education-related crises in recent years. His resignation came amid sustained pressure from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led protest movement, which had demanded accountability over alleged examination irregularities and reforms to safeguard the future of students.
In a statement announcing his resignation, Pradhan said the developments of the past several days had deeply saddened him and emphasized that the issue was not a matter of personal prestige. He stated that his decision was guided by the larger national interest, ensuring that students’ futures were protected and that the controversy did not become a source of prolonged legal disputes.
Pradhan said he did not want anti-national forces to exploit the situation or create divisions in the country. Stressing the importance of maintaining national unity, he added that students should be able to focus on their education and career aspirations without uncertainty surrounding competitive examinations. He confirmed that he had submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister.
The resignation marked the culmination of weeks of protests triggered by allegations of irregularities in the NEET examination. The issue had generated widespread concern among students, parents, and educational stakeholders across the country. It also revived memories of similar controversies faced during Pradhan’s tenure in 2024 regarding alleged NEET and NET paper leaks.
A day before the resignation, the Central Government announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening the integrity of public examinations. These included the proposal of a new law prescribing stringent punishment for those involved in examination paper leaks, along with the establishment of fast-track courts to ensure speedy trials in such cases.
The nationwide agitation was spearheaded by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a platform launched by former AAP functionary Abhijeet Dipke. Initially emerging as a satirical online campaign in May, the organisation evolved into a significant youth-led movement demanding accountability for examination irregularities. The CJP began its indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar on June 20, attracting support from students and citizens from different parts of the country.
Following Pradhan’s resignation, the CJP announced the withdrawal of its 36-day protest after the government agreed to all its principal demands. Besides the resignation of the Education Minister, the government accepted demands to provide ₹1 crore compensation to the families of students who reportedly died by suicide and assured that no action would be taken against student protesters. It also indicated that steps would be initiated to withdraw FIRs registered during the agitation.
The end of the protest was announced during a joint press conference attended by Union ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, along with CJP spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das. CJP leaders described the government’s decision as a major victory for the student movement and appealed to protesters nationwide to peacefully withdraw from demonstration sites.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had undertaken a 26-day indefinite hunger strike in support of the movement, described the outcome as a victory of peace, patience, and perseverance. He congratulated the youth who participated in the protests and thanked citizens across the country for supporting the campaign.
Political reactions followed swiftly after the resignation. Opposition parties termed the development a victory for democracy and truth, asserting that sustained public pressure had compelled the government to act. Several leaders praised the student movement for highlighting concerns regarding examination transparency and accountability.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, defended Pradhan’s record and described his resignation as an example of personal integrity and responsibility. BJP leaders praised his contribution to education reforms, including the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), and acknowledged his role in expanding educational initiatives during his tenure. Party leaders also expressed confidence that the government’s newly announced reforms would strengthen the credibility of India’s examination system and restore public trust.
