Dhanush postpones his upcoming film Om to avoid a clash with Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2. The actor cited respect for the Tamil cinema superstar and confirmed the film will not release during Diwali, with a new release date to be announced soon.
Tamil actor Dhanush has decided to postpone the release of his upcoming film ‘Om’ to avoid a box-office clash with Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Jailer 2’. The actor announced the decision on Wednesday through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying the move was made out of immense respect for the Tamil cinema superstar.
According to Dhanush, ‘Jailer 2’ is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 15, just a day before the previously planned release of ‘Om’. Rather than releasing the two films in close proximity, the actor and the team behind ‘Om’ have opted to move their film to a later date.
Dhanush explained that changing a film’s release date comes with several challenges, but said the decision was taken considering the long-standing admiration for Rajinikanth and the wider interests of the Tamil film industry.
The actor also confirmed that ‘Om’ will not be released during the Diwali period this year. He noted that Suriya’s upcoming film had already been announced for the same date, making it another reason for his film to stay away from the festive release window.
Dhanush said the dates for the other films had been announced first and stressed the importance of mutual understanding among filmmakers when major releases are scheduled close to one another. He maintained that big films should respect each other’s release decisions while keeping the broader welfare of the cinema industry in mind.
The actor is expected to announce the new release date for ‘Om’ soon. Until then, details regarding the film’s revised theatrical schedule remain awaited.
The decision also carries an additional personal context because Dhanush was previously married to Aishwarya Rajinikanth, Rajinikanth’s daughter. Their marriage ended in separation, but Dhanush’s connection with the Rajinikanth family has remained a notable part of his personal and professional history.
Meanwhile, ‘Jailer 2’ is the sequel to the 2024 blockbuster ‘Jailer’, which featured Rajinikanth in the lead role. In the original film, Rajinikanth played Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer who becomes involved in a battle against an organised network of artefact smugglers.
The 2024 film combined action, drama and elements of crime, with Rajinikanth’s character drawing upon a criminal network he had developed across different parts of India. His past as a feared but principled jailer played a central role in the story.

The sequel has generated considerable attention because of Rajinikanth’s return to the character. Its October 15 release date now means that Dhanush’s ‘Om’ will not compete directly with the film during the same release period.
With ‘Om’ moving away from both ‘Jailer 2’ and the Diwali window occupied by Suriya’s film, audiences will have to wait for the makers to confirm the new theatrical release date. Dhanush has said that an announcement will be made soon.
