D Gukesh to take on Magnus Carlsen in opening round of Norway Chess tournament beginning at Stavanger –

India’s top chess stars, World Champion D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi, will lead the country’s charge at the prestigious Norway Chess tournament starting today at Stavanger. The event features six elite players each in the men’s and women’s sections and follows a double round-robin format.
 
Gukesh is set to open his campaign with a highly anticipated match against world No.1 Magnus Carlsen, while debutant Erigaisi will take on China’s Wei Yi. This is the first time India has two male players in the tournament, boosting hopes for a historic title.
 
In the women’s section, Koneru Humpy will face fellow Indian R Vaishali in the opening round. Humpy will also compete against top players like China’s Ju Wenjun and Tan Zhongyi in what promises to be a tough contest.
 
The tournament offers equal prize money for men and women.
 
Despite recent setbacks, Gukesh is aiming to bounce back after winning the world title last year. Meanwhile, Erigaisi will look to make his mark, and veteran Humpy remains a strong contender in the women’s field.
