In Bangladesh, at least 10 people died and over 30,000 homes were destroyed after cyclone Remal smashed into low-lying areas of Bangladesh on Sunday night. Severe Cyclone Remal made landfall between Khepupara and West Bengal’s Sagar Island on Sunday night. The storm weakened after it crossed onto the land, eventually becoming a depression.
A wind-driven surge and heavy rain have inundated a vast area of Sundarbans and embankments in low-lying regions of Satkhira, Khulna, Begarhat, Patuakhali, Bhola, and Barguna districts of Bangladesh, said an official. “Hundreds of shrimp enclosures have been washed away, a huge number of thatched houses and standing crops were damaged while trees, electricity and telephone poles were uprooted. Many villages in coastal areas were also submerged by the tidal surge,” he added.
The violent storm disrupted power supply to southern districts of Bangladesh, leaving over 2 crore people without power since Sunday night leading to disruption of mobile networks and internet service.
Out of ten deaths reported due to the cyclone in Bangladesh, seven died in Barisal division and most of them lost life after they were crushed under fallen houses or collapsed walls or trees, reports local authorities.
Khulna District Administration, Mongla Port Authority, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG), Fire Service and Civil Defence are working to rehabilitate the affected people.
Around 61 kilometres of embankments in Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat have been damaged partially, Water Development Board (WDB) officials said.
The incessant rain has flooded parts of Dhaka and Chattogram cities leading to disruption of public life.
