Tension ran high in city suburb Haphania as miscreants , allegedly BJP supporters, launched a massive attack on the opposition CPM workers on Thursday. In the assault about 20 CPM workers including women were injured and had to be admitted in the hospital.

The CPM in a press statement squarely accused the BJP for the attack and demanded immediate action against those responsible.

CPM sources said a protest rally was organized by the Dukli unit as part of a country-wide programme. The rally was organized to protest against price rise etc across the country . Opposition Leader Manik Sarkar was scheduled to address the rally and take part in the march. The protest was supposed to be held at Hapania and police were also duly informed.

However, at the last moment police denied the permission citing apprehension of law and order situation. The CPM however decided to go ahead with the programme- with slight change –instead of public meeting the party decided to stage protest march.

It was when the protest march began, the CPM alleged, BJP workers thronged in various various entry points to the venue and then launched a concerted attack on the CPM cadres.

Opposition leader then talked to the Chief Minister and DGP over telephone and informed them about the incident while another group of CPM leaders and workers gheraoed the police headquarters in Agartala.

A delegation among the protestors met SP West. Additional security personnel were deployed at Haphania.

The opposition party in a statement condemned the incident .
