CPI(M) stages protest at West Agartala Police Station over alleged communal attack on rickshaw puller Didar Hossain. Party demands immediate arrest of accused and swift police action to ensure justice and communal harmony.

The opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI(M), on Saturday staged a protest at the West Agartala Police Station, condemning an alleged communal attack on a rickshaw puller in the city. The demonstration was organized by the party’s Sadar district committee, a day after the Congress Party raised similar concerns over the incident.

According to CPI(M) leaders, the victim, identified as Didar Hossain, was returning home late on Friday night after completing his daily work as a rickshaw puller when he was allegedly attacked by a group of miscreants near the Nivedita Club area in Agartala. The attackers reportedly stopped him, questioned his identity, and assaulted him brutally after he revealed his name.

A party delegation led by senior CPI(M) leader Ratan Das met senior police officials at the West Agartala Police Station and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the incident. The leaders accused the police of acting slowly despite the seriousness of the allegations and warned that continued inaction could lead to wider unrest.

Addressing reporters, Ratan Das claimed that the assault had clear communal overtones. “The victim was targeted only after he introduced himself by name. This clearly points to a communal motive behind the attack,” Das alleged. He further stated that the miscreants attempted to bury the rickshaw puller alive under sand, an act that could have resulted in his death if local residents had not intervened in time.

According to Das, nearby residents heard the victim’s cries for help and rushed to the spot, forcing the attackers to flee. The injured rickshaw puller was then rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. His condition is reported to be stable, though he sustained serious injuries.

The CPI(M) leader said that the victim’s family has already lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the police, naming the alleged attackers. “We have specific names of the culprits. Despite this, no arrests have been made so far. This delay is unacceptable,” Das said. He urged the police administration to take swift and impartial action to ensure justice.

The protest at the police station remained peaceful but vocal, with party workers raising slogans demanding the arrest of the accused and stricter action against those attempting to disrupt communal harmony. CPI(M) leaders emphasized that such incidents create fear among working-class communities and undermine social peace.

The incident has sparked political reactions across party lines, with opposition parties accusing the ruling establishment of failing to maintain law and order. CPI(M) leaders warned that if the police fail to act promptly, the party would intensify its agitation across the district.

Police officials, however, stated that an investigation is underway and assured that appropriate action would be taken based on evidence. They said efforts are being made to identify and apprehend all those involved in the alleged assault.

The incident has once again brought focus on concerns over communal tensions and the safety of daily wage workers in the state, with political parties calling for stronger preventive measures and faster justice delivery.
