According to Anjan Das, Secretary of the CPIM’s Dhalai district committee, the party had organized a commemorative event near the national highway between Chalubari and Bamancherra panchayats. As the program was nearing its conclusion, alleged BJP-backed miscreants attacked CPIM workers. Anil Das, a leader of the Tapshili Samannay Samiti, sustained a serious head injury and was referred to Kulai Hospital in Dhalai district for treatment.

In response, the CPIM staged a protest rally in Kamalpur town and submitted a memorandum to Officer-in-Charge Sanjay Laskar, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

Meanwhile, Surma MLA Swapna Das Paul visited Kamalpur Hospital and presented a different account. She claimed that BJP supporters, while celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti in the local market, were attacked by miscreants. BJP worker Prashanta Das was reportedly seriously injured in the incident.

The violent turn of events during an occasion meant to celebrate peace, equality, and unity has drawn criticism from locals and observers. Dr. Ambedkar, a champion of non-violence and a tireless advocate for the marginalized, devoted his life to eradicating social injustice.

That violence erupted on a day commemorating his birth has cast a shadow over the celebrations in Chalubari and Bamancherra, leaving the region tense. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals, especially on a day meant to honour his profound contributions to the nation.

The high-level meeting held at the station was attended by senior officials, including DIG (Northern Range) Rati Ranjan Debnath, Superintendent of Police (Unakoti) Sudambika R., DSP Prasenjit Natta, SDPO Kumarghat Kamal Debbarma, and other senior law enforcement officers. The visit came in the wake of the April 12 incident, where tensions flared during a protest against the Waqf Act, leading to a confrontation between demonstrators and police forces.

After the meeting, DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath addressed the media and reassured the public that the situation had returned to normal. He emphasized that peace had been restored and that efforts were being taken to ensure that such disturbances do not recur.

“The people of this area have always believed in peaceful coexistence, and that sentiment remains strong. Following the incident, we have taken a number of preventive steps, including intensified patrolling and heightened police presence in sensitive areas. At present, the situation is fully under control and normalcy has been restored,” the DIG stated.

He also appealed to the residents of the area to continue their cooperation with law enforcement authorities in maintaining peace and public order. “We seek the support of the public to prevent the spread of misinformation and to maintain harmony. The administration remains committed to safeguarding the rights and safety of all citizens,” he added.

While DGP Anurag Dhankar did not make a public statement during his visit, officials described the inspection as part of a routine administrative exercise. However, reliable sources revealed that the DGP received a comprehensive report on the April 12 incident and closely reviewed the response of the local police and administration. He reportedly gave instructions for enhanced security measures in the area to prevent any further escalation and ensure preparedness for future situations.

The DGP also took note of the immediate action taken by the district police under the leadership of SP Sudambika R. to control the situation and maintain order. According to sources, he appreciated the swift and effective handling of the unrest and emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and coordination among all departments.

The recent unrest had sparked concerns among locals and officials alike, prompting heightened security across key areas of Unakoti district. With the top brass of the state police personally monitoring developments, the administration has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace, transparency, and swift response to any untoward incident.

As of now, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and no further incidents have been reported since the April 12 clash.
