Consumer Ministry identifies 13 dark patterns on e-commerce platforms –

Minister of Consumer Affairs Prahlad Joshi today held a meeting with  the e-commerce platforms over the issue related to dark patterns in New Delhi. Briefing the Media after the meeting the Minister said that the ministry has identified 13 dark patterns. He said that false urgency claims, misleading advertisements falls under such Dark Patterns. The Minister also directed the stakeholders to abide by the guidelines issued by the Ministry related to Dark Patterns. Mr. Joshi said that clear opt out and cancellations options to be given to the consumers while shopping on e-commerce platforms. He emphasised the importance of responsible industry behavior, adding that the Guidelines on Dark Patterns were the result of intensive consultations with various stakeholders, including leading e-commerce companies and industry associations. The Minister noted a significant surge in consumer complaints related to dark patterns on the National Consumer Helpline (NCH). He further added that companies should proactively recognize and remove these deceptive practices before notices are issued. Mr. Joshi informed that all stakeholders in principle agreed to follow the guidelines. He also proposed a joint working group with stakeholders. Over 50 e-commerce platforms were present in the meeting.  
A dark pattern is a deceptive user interface design used by digital platforms to mislead or manipulate consumers into making choices they did not intend. These practices can amount to misleading ads, unfair trade practices, or violations of consumer rights.
