Tripura Congress is considering an electoral understanding with the CPI(M) ahead of upcoming civic body elections. TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha plans a key party meeting followed by informal discussions with Left leaders amid changing opposition dynamics.

The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is preparing its electoral strategy for the upcoming civic body elections, with the possibility of renewing an electoral understanding with the CPI(M) emerging as a key political development in the state. Despite strained relations between the two opposition parties, Congress leaders have indicated that discussions with the Left leadership may take place after an internal party meeting.

TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha said a meeting of the Pradesh Congress Committee would be convened shortly, possibly next week, to determine the party’s strategy and tactics for the civic polls. All PCC members, including the party’s three legislators, are expected to participate in the meeting.

Saha said the Congress intended to take advantage of what it considers growing anti-incumbency against the BJP-led state government. He referred to the ruling party’s performance in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held in April and the Village Committee elections conducted on September 28 as developments that could influence the political calculations ahead of the civic polls.

Significantly, the Congress leader indicated that informal discussions with the state CPI(M) leadership could follow the PCC meeting, keeping open the possibility of cooperation between the two parties.

“We will first hold the PCC meeting and then have an informal discussion with the CPI(M) leadership over tea across the table to discuss various aspects of the upcoming elections to the civic bodies,” Saha said.

His remarks suggest that the Congress has not ruled out an electoral understanding with the Left party, although no formal agreement has been announced. The proposed discussions are expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to assess their political positions and consider possible strategies for the forthcoming elections.

The Congress and the CPI(M)-led Left Front had contested the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections together in an effort to challenge the BJP. However, the alliance failed to deliver the electoral outcome its leaders had hoped for, and relations between the two parties subsequently became strained.

Tensions increased after the CPI(M) unilaterally announced its candidate for the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election. The decision resulted in a triangular contest involving the BJP, CPI(M) and Congress, with the Left party eventually losing the seat. The episode further complicated relations between the two opposition parties.

The parties also failed to reach an electoral understanding during the TTAADC elections in April and the September 28 elections to 587 Village Committees under the autonomous district council. In those contests, Tipra Motha emerged as the dominant political force, virtually sweeping the Village Committee polls.

The absence of coordinated opposition strategies in these elections has renewed attention on whether Congress and CPI(M) could explore cooperation in the upcoming civic polls. A possible understanding could influence candidate selection, campaign planning and the broader contest against the BJP, although the outcome of any discussions remains uncertain.

The possibility of renewed cooperation is also politically significant because senior Congress leader and former TPCC president Sudip Roy Barman had earlier expressed categorical opposition to an alliance with the CPI(M). His position highlights the internal and political considerations that could shape the party’s final decision.

For now, the Congress is expected to focus on its proposed PCC meeting before entering into informal discussions with the Left leadership. The party’s final electoral approach will depend on the deliberations within its state unit and any subsequent understanding reached with other opposition parties.

With civic body elections approaching, the proposed discussions could become an important development in Tripura’s opposition politics. However, until the parties announce a formal arrangement, the possibility of a Congress-CPI(M) electoral understanding remains under consideration rather than a confirmed alliance.
