Tripura Congress MLA Birajit Sinha claims a rift between BJP leaders is stalling court construction in Kumarghat, demands urgent action.

Senior Congress leader and MLA Birajit Sinha has publicly alleged that internal conflict between a BJP minister and a BJP legislator has stalled the construction of a sub-divisional court in Kumarghat. Sinha made the remarks during an extended meeting of the Unakoti District Congress Committee held at his residence in Kailashahar on April 30.

The meeting, which took place in the conference hall of Sinha’s residence, was attended by several top Congress leaders from across Unakoti district, including district Congress president Md. Badruzzaman, Rudrendu Bhattacharjee, Runu Miya, Ashish Sengupta, and Dip Sinha, among others.

Leaders from Across Six Constituencies Present

The extended session also saw participation from key Congress leaders representing all six assembly constituencies under Unakoti district. Veteran Congress leader Bighna Dhar Tripura was present from the Karamchhara constituency, while Samiran Das represented Pabiachhara, and Shyamal Bhattacharjee attended from the Fatikroy constituency.

The meeting began with a one-minute silence in memory of the tourists who were recently killed in a tragic incident at Pehelgaon, showing solidarity with the grieving families.

Congress Preparing for Grassroots Movement

Addressing the media after the session, MLA Birajit Sinha said that the meeting was convened following directives from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which recently concluded a national-level conference in Gujarat. One of the key resolutions from that conference, Sinha said, was to empower each district unit to mobilize and organize grassroots-level agitations.

“In line with the AICC’s mandate, today’s district-level meeting was held to finalize our next steps. The Congress will soon launch a district-wide movement with the slogan ‘Save the Constitution, Save the Country,’” Sinha stated.

As part of this initiative, a public gathering of the Tribal Congress is scheduled to take place on May 3 (Saturday) at the Chinibagan School Ground in Kailashahar. The party aims to unite workers and supporters to raise pressing issues affecting the region.

Demand for ADC Elections and Development Councils

Sinha also emphasized that the state government must expedite elections for the ADC (Autonomous District Council) Village Councils, which have remained pending for an extended period. Additionally, he urged the formation of development councils across Tripura to ensure the welfare of marginalized communities and better governance in tribal and rural regions.

Court Project Stalled Due to BJP Infighting, Says MLA

However, the issue that sparked the strongest reaction during the meeting was the halted construction of a sub-divisional court in Kumarghat. According to Sinha, an ongoing power tussle between a BJP minister—who is also the MLA of Fatikroy—and another BJP legislator from the Pabiachhara constituency has created a deadlock over the location of the court.

“While the minister wants the court to be set up in Fatikroy, the Pabiachhara MLA insists it be built in Kumarghat. Due to this internal squabble, the project has not moved forward,” alleged Sinha.

Sinha and the Unakoti District Congress are firmly backing the construction of the sub-divisional court in Kumarghat, arguing that it is the logical administrative choice. At the same time, they propose that a new block office should be established in Fatikroy to address the developmental needs of that area.

Congress Stepping Up Political Pressure

The Congress party appears determined to capitalize on this internal friction within the ruling BJP by highlighting administrative delays and perceived governance failures. By drawing attention to infrastructure and legal accessibility issues—like the stalled court project—Congress is aiming to re-establish its grassroots connect in Tripura, particularly in Unakoti district.

With the political temperature rising, and public frustration mounting over stalled projects and delayed ADC elections, the coming weeks may see intensified political activity and renewed demands for action from both the government and opposition.
