The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has announced a series of street protests starting October 21 to protest against the perceived breakdown of law and order and rising unemployment in the state.
TPCC President Ashish Kumar Saha, addressing a press conference on Thursday, demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, alleging that an “atmosphere of anarchy” has gripped the state. He dismissed the government’s claims of improved law and order, citing national statistics that reflect the opposite.
“Between September 2 and early October, Tripura witnessed eight murders and eight rapes, along with several thefts, robberies, and other criminal incidents,” Saha said.
He highlighted key incidents, such as the murder of a mother-daughter duo in Netaji Nagar, the rape of a girl in Teliamura, and an attack on a mother and son in Bishalgarh. Additionally, he mentioned the death of a young man allegedly due to police torture in Manu Bazar and the stabbing of a shopkeeper in front of police personnel at Melermath on October 15.
Saha criticized the security arrangements during recent festivals, noting that crimes occurred despite heightened vigilance. He also expressed concerns about rising communal tensions in areas like Kadamtala, Panisagar, and Jubarajnagar.
Accusing the Chief Minister of mismanaging the Home Department and the state’s economy, Saha demanded his immediate resignation. He further criticized the government for failing to control rising commodity prices and generate employment, alleging that the administration is stoking unrest to distract citizens.
“To safeguard the people’s interests, the Congress party will take to the streets starting October 21,” Saha announced, adding that widespread frustration and sadness are palpable among residents.
TPCC spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty and Youth Congress leader Shahjahan Islam were also present at the briefing.
