Congress called 24 hours Bandh on Monday successful in three Northern districts of the state passed off peacefully evoking mixed response. Reports said while in Kailasahar- the home town of PCC president Birajit Sinha the bandh was near total, in other parts of North Tripura, Uniakoti or Dhalai districts bandh failed make much impact.
In Kailasahar, senior Congress leaders of the district including Md Badruzzaman, Rudrendu Bhattacharjee joined the picketing and there were responses with thin or zero attendance being reported from educational institutions, government offices and business establishments. Vehicular movement on road was also negligible. State NSUI president Samrat Roy also went to Kailasahar and led a motor bike rally. Police arrested the picketers including Birajit Sinha, Md Badruzzaman, Rudrendu Bhattacharjee, Samrat Roy and others and detained them in temporary detention centre at Town Hall. They were later released.
Sinha said, ‘bandh was total’ in all three districts and it showed people lost faith on the BJP-IPFT government.
But in Dharmanagar the Bandh virtually failed to make any impact. School, colleges, offices, and shops functioned normally and there was no sign of bandh as far as traffic movement was concerned. As many as 18 Congress leaders and activists were arrested by Police while picketing.
In ther meantime , Youth Congress in Agartala protested against the rising price hike of essential commodities. In a unique display of protest the Youth Congress workers brought one old bike and set it afire in front of Congress Bhawan to protest against increased fuel price.
After the protests Congress in-charge Szarita Laitphlang accused the BJP governments both in centre and also in state of failure to meet the aspirations of the people and creating lawless ness.
