Tripura Legislative Assembly observed ‘Historic July’ honoring its 1963 founding and 2011 relocation. CM Manik Saha led the ceremony with tree plantation and tributes to past leaders. The event emphasized democratic values, green governance, and proposals for broader inclusion of ex-leaders in future commemorations.

In a heartfelt homage to its legislative journey, the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Tuesday observed “Historic July,” a commemorative event marking two pivotal milestones in the Assembly’s history — its establishment on July 1, 1963, and its relocation from the iconic Ujjayanta Palace to the current Assembly building on July 22, 2011.

The event, held at the Assembly premises, brought together sitting legislators, ministers, and key political figures, led by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who emphasized the significance of remembering and celebrating the institutional legacy of Tripura’s highest democratic body.

A First-of-Its-Kind Observance

“This is the first time such an event has been organized in the state,” remarked Chief Minister Dr. Saha, highlighting its unique nature. “The Tripura Assembly has never seen a celebration like this, and it’s important that we recognize the symbolic value of these milestones.”

Joining Dr. Saha were Speaker of the Assembly Bishwabandhu Sen, Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Pal, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, and several senior ministers including Ratan Lal Nath, Animesh Debbarma, Pranajit Singha Roy, Bikash Debbarma, and MLAs Gopal Chandra Roy and Birajit Sinha.

Remembering the Assembly’s Glorious Past

During the event, leaders from across the political spectrum took the opportunity to reflect on the glorious journey of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. Dr. Saha stated, “The Assembly is not just a building; it is a temple of democracy. It is where the Opposition and Treasury Benches come together to work in a symbiotic manner for the welfare of the state.”

The Chief Minister noted that the commemoration should not be limited to a simple internal event. He proposed a broader celebration involving the public and extended stakeholders, stating, “This should be organized in a broader way, beyond the Assembly building. We must invite former Chief Ministers and ex-Speakers who are still with us to participate and share their memories.”

He further paid tribute to Late Upendra Kumar Roy, who served as the first Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly from July 1, 1963, to July 11, 1967, during the tenure of then Chief Minister Sachindra Lal Singha.

Dr. Saha emphasized that the relocation of the Assembly on July 22, 2011, from the historic Ujjayanta Palace to the current location, marked a major transition in Tripura’s political and architectural history. “It was a historic milestone in the Assembly’s journey,” he said.

Adding Green to Governance

In keeping with the day’s theme of continuity and growth, the Chief Minister, accompanied by other dignitaries and MLAs, participated in a tree plantation drive within the Assembly

premises. The symbolic act underlined the commitment to sustainable governance and environmental consciousness — echoing the state’s broader developmental goals.

This green initiative was also a reminder that as the Assembly continues to function as the hub of democratic discourse, it must also set an example in addressing modern challenges such as climate change and ecological balance.

A Call for Inclusive Democratic Memory

Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury also addressed the gathering, appreciating the idea of celebrating the institutional past of the Assembly. He noted that democratic strength grows through remembrance, reflection, and cooperation.

The bipartisan spirit of the event was notable, with members across party lines joining hands in both the commemorative program and the plantation drive. The presence of multiple ministers and veteran legislators added gravitas to the day’s proceedings.
