The closing ceremony of the 78th Bankul Mahamuni Buddha Mela was held at Manu Bankul in the Sabroom sub-division on March 17. Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, speaking as the chief guest, highlighted the importance of preserving cultural and religious traditions.
“The state government respects all communities, cultures, religions, and festivals. Every community should strive to uphold its own heritage,” said Minister Noatia. He also mentioned the government’s sincere efforts in establishing the International Buddhist University at Bankul, which aims to promote Buddhist studies and peace in the region.
Other dignitaries, including MLA Mailafru Mog, MLA Jitendra Majumder, Buddhist Guru Khemachra Bhante, Buddhist Monk U Kaodania, MDC Debjit Tripura, and Mahamuni Development Society Secretary Thaikei Mog, also addressed the gathering. Several other leaders, including MLA Pramod Riang and MDC Kongjong Mog, were present at the event.
The festival featured a fruit and vegetable exhibition, where outstanding farmers were awarded. Additionally, 10 stalls were set up to showcase various government development projects. The ICA Department organized daily cultural programs, adding vibrancy to the fair. The closing ceremony featured a special performance by Assamese singer Dipanwita Deka.
The Bankul Mahamuni Buddha Mela plays a crucial role in fostering unity and peace, while also promoting Tripura’s rich Buddhist heritage.
