Chief Justice of India Bhushan R. Gavai spoke on the theme “Constitution of India: The Contribution of Dr B R Ambedkar” at Osmania University in Hyderabad this evening. He highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s central role as chief architect of the Constitution, especially his efforts in embedding liberty, equality, fraternity and the mechanisms needed to protect those rights, such as Article 32, the right to constitutional remedies. Justice Gavai emphasised that the Constitution must adapt alongside society.
He noted its dynamic expansion, most notably through judicial interpretation of Article 21, extending it to education, health, dignity, environment, etc in keeping with Ambedkar’s vision. Reflecting Dr. Ambedkar’s warning, Justice Gavai underscored that political democracy alone isn’t enough without addressing social and economic inequality, otherwise democracy becomes unsustainable. CJI reiterated that the legislature, executive and judiciary must operate under Constitutional supremacy, placing democratic values above all including Parliament itself.
