Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari from near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Based on information, a team of DB arrested him from near the Dhaka airport on Monday afternoon, said Joint commissioner (DB- North) of DMP Rabiul Bhuiyan.
Chinmoy was arrested in a case filed with Chattrogram Kotwali Police Station. He has been sent to Chattogram, added the DB official. The ISKCON leader was reportedly preparing to travel to Chattogram at the time of his arrest.
A protest erupted in Chittagong demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Brahmachari, the spokesperson of Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha. On Monday evening, protesters marched and rallied at the Cheragi intersection in the city, chanting slogans and demanding his release.
The protest disrupted traffic in the Cheragi to Andarkilla, Jamal Khan and Nandankanon areas, causing significant inconvenience for commuters.
The Sanatan Jagaran Mancha had earlier issued a press release calling for demonstrations in the district and upazila nationwide to condemn the detention of their spokesperson.
In response, law enforcement agencies maintained a heightened presence around the Cheragi intersection to prevent any untoward incidents.
CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) Kazi M Tarek Aziz said: “Followers of the Sanatan religion are gathering and protesting at Cheragi. Law enforcement is on high alert at the scene, and measures are being taken to ensure the situation remains under control.”
Chinmoy Krishna Brahmachari was detained earlier on Monday at around 3:50pm from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in the capital.
Recently, two organizations, Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha and Bangladesh Sommilito Shankhaloghu Jot—merged to form an alliance under the banner of Bangladesh Sommilito Sanatan Jagaran Jot. Chinmoy Krishna Das has been made the spokesperson for this newly formed coalition.
