Centre Hikes Gunny Bag Usage Charges by 40% to Aid States in Procurement Operations

Must Read

Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi today announced an increase in usage charges of gunny bags by nearly 40 percent.

The move is expected to bring financial relief to State Governments and Union Territories, thereby ensuring smooth procurement operations, support to sustainable packaging practices and strengthening Centre-State cooperation in foodgrain procurement and distribution. This is in response to the demand of States and UTs to the Department of Food and Public Distribution to review packaging charges.

The department constituted a committee comprising members from State Governments/UTs and Food Corporation of India, which revised usage charges from 7.32 rupees per used bag to 10.22 rupees per used bag or the actual cost incurred by the State Govt/UT, whichever is lower.
