New Delhi/IBNS: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Monday asked a group of students to cancel the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The students allegedly planned to screen India: The Modi Question at 9 PM on Tuesday.

No prior permission for this event has been taken from the JNU administration, the university administration said in a statement.

The Centre has blocked access to the two-part BBC documentary which claims to have investigated certain aspects of the 2002 Gujarat riots when PM Modi was the states Chief Minister.

This is to emphasise that such an unauthorized activity may disturb the peace and harmony of the University Campus. The concerned students/individuals are firmly advised to cancel the proposed programme, the JNU statement said.

The government had on Friday directed social media platforms Twitter and YouTube to block links to the series.

Earlier External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the two-part docu-series was a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative.

The BBCs documentary titled India: The Modi Question consisted of PM Modis (then Gujarat CM) was not broadcast on Indian television networks.

According to reports, in the series, a BBC reporter quizzed the state leadership about the 2002 Gujarat riots and the alleged ethnic mob violence that followed.

The violence erupted allegedly after a train carrying Hindu pilgrims in Godhra was set on fire.
